VolkerFitzpatrick has been appointed to build a £174m film and TV production centre in East London.
Eastbrook Studios in Dagenham will include 12 soundstages and three acres of backlot, as well as offices and ancillary space.
Construction of the studios, which the firm said will be London’s largest, is due to be completed in 2024. It is claimed that the venue will create 1,200 jobs and contribute £35m a year to the local economy.
VolkerFitzpatrick began work on the 26-acre site in August by modifying two existing warehouses, as well as providing groundworks and piling.
The firm was appointed by media real estate company Hackman Capital Partners and its affiliate, The MBS Group. In 2020, Hackman agreed a deal with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to develop and operate the venue.
Stuart Deverill, managing director of VolkerFitzpatrick’s building division, said: “With our expertise in constructing large-volume space [and] modern offices, and [with] an extensive external works capability, this project plays to the strengths of our business and our experienced team.
“The project will provide much needed soundstage capacity for the industry, as well as realising a valuable regeneration opportunity for one of London’s most exciting and fastest-growing boroughs.”
Jason Hariton, chief studio and real estate officer at Hackman Capital Partners, said: “Our continued investment in the area will deliver significant and necessary additional infrastructure to meet the demands of the UK’s booming creative industries, while creating generational opportunities for the local community.”
