Explore Australian history inside the building that stops time – a Siemens technology experience

From ancient fossils and creature displays, to over 600 historic and contemporary First Nations artworks, Melbourne Museum is home to many significant artefacts that tell the story of Australia’s past. Powered by Siemens, the building management system works to prevent the deterioration of these precious objects through closely monitored environmental conditions. Winners of this month’s Beyond 150 Competition will have the opportunity to explore this advanced system, as part of an immersive technology tour across Melbourne.

To celebrate 150 years innovating in Australia across healthcare, energy, and industrial development, Siemens has launched a series of competitions, aimed at showcasing their innovative work. With new prizes being announced every month until the end of the year, the competition series is taking winners behind the scenes to showcase how Siemens technology is helping transform the everyday across Australia.

Entries for this month’s prize draw are now open for a chance to win an exclusive tour across Melbourne and the iconic Yarra Valley wine region. From a helicopter ride to Levantine Hill Estate and a luxurious dining experience, to a lesson at URBNSURF’s automated wave pool, this package will immerse winners in the capabilities of the Siemens portfolio.

The Museums Victoria network is home to over 17 million objects, stored and displayed across multiple buildings. Situated amongst the leafy and sprawling Carlton Gardens, Melbourne Museum is the centrepiece of this cultural infrastructure.

May’s competition package will feature a behind the scenes tour of a world-class energy efficiency initiative, demonstrating how ‘the building that stops time’ has significantly reduced its environmental footprint to ensure long-term sustainability.

As part of the Victorian Government’s Greener Government Buildings Program, Museums Victoria searched for an energy-efficiency partner and turned to Siemens – the global leaders in intelligent building technology.

The resulting energy performance contract saw a state-of-the-art Siemens building management system installed in the flagship Melbourne Museum, and HVAC, lighting and water efficiency upgrades carried out across six Museums Victoria sites. More than 1 megawatt of solar power (2,743 solar panels) has also been installed.

In total, the savings have been substantial with significant reductions in electricity consumption, utility costs and Co2 emissions.

Siemens believes that digitalisation can help buildings to ‘talk’, offering data generation that indicates when systems are under stress or needing attention. Timing can be crucial, and the perfect conditions needed to prevent damage and deterioration to objects stored in the museum require constant regulation.

Over 4,800 data collection points feed into the Desigo CC building management system. Siemens’ cloud-based energy platform, Navigator, uses the generated data to perform sustainability performance intelligence. This allows the infrastructure to continue protecting millions of precious items against the effects of time, while also meeting critical efficiency targets.
