Eiffage-led consortium to extend Benin’s Cotonou port

A consortium made up of French companies Eiffage and Spie Batignolles with Beninese firm Adéoti has been chosen to expand Cotonou port in the West African country of Benin. When complete, Cotonou will be able to accommodate Post-Panamax-sized container ships.

Eiffage Génie Civil Marine’s share of the €160m contract is worth €119m.

Work on the project includes:

  • Deepening the entire north dock to 16m, extending the length by 214m and constructing a roll-on roll-off ramp
  • Extending the south dock by 154m and increasing its depth to 15m
  • Adding a breakwater to the end of the harbour basin
  • Dredging all berths to 16m, as well as maintenance dredging of the basin

Port activities will continue during construction, which includes five months of design and method studies.

Work on the project is due to begin in the first quarter of 2023 and be complete by 2027.
