China building collapse death toll surges to 53

Confirmed deaths from the collapse of a multi-storey residential building in the Chinese city of Changsha, Hunan province has risen to 53 today from 26 yesterday.

It follows yesterday’s rescue of the tenth survivor, a woman who spent 132 hours trapped in rubble after the collapse on Friday, 29 April in the city’s Wangcheng District.

Police have arrested nine people in connection with the disaster, including the building owner, three others responsible for the building’s design and construction, and five people from an engineering quality testing company suspected of providing false certifications.

Chinese officials describe the building as a “self-built residential structure”, with President Xi Jinping calling for nationwide inspections of such buildings.
