Arup and Jacobs’ Long Island rail expansion comes in $100m under budget

A 16km expansion of the Long Island Rail Road, America’s busiest commuter line, has been completed on time and for $100m less than its budget.

The extension, which runs from Floral Park to Hicksville on the west of the island, was built as a joint venture between UK consulting engineer Arup and US engineer Jacobs. The two project managed the work, as well as overseeing rail operations and digital information management.

Arup and Jacobs’ contract is part of the $2.5bn Long Island Rail Road Main Line Expansion Project, which includes the rehabilitation of five stations, the demolition of eight crossings, the upgrading of seven bridges and the installation of sound attenuation barriers and landscaping.

Gary Morris, senior vice president of Jacobs’ People & Places Solutions, said: “Our development of a digital dashboard and comprehensive project management plan was key to facilitating the programme’s success and Jacobs’ commitment to creating a more connected, sustainable world.”

Kathleen Hochul, New York’s governor, added: “The completion of the … project connects commuters with a more resilient and flexible railroad with frequent service, modern stations, ADA accessibility and more travel opportunities for Long Islanders and visitors.”
